The first Kurdistan Beautiful Environment Film Festival was held at Empire Cinema in Erbil under the slogan “Humans Are the Product of Their Environment,” bringing together filmmakers, artists, and environmental activists for a two-day event focused on nature and sustainability.
The festival featured 18 short films, including artistic, documentary, and promotional productions aimed at raising awareness about environmental protection in the Kurdistan Region.
Festival director Pushtewan Abdullah said the event was created to encourage environmental responsibility through the power of cinema and art.
According to Abdullah, the festival extended beyond film screenings and included social and environmental activities involving artists and public figures from across Kurdistan. Participants took part in tree planting campaigns, environmental clean-up projects, and waste collection efforts, which were later featured in a special television program to spread awareness among the public.
He also explained that the festival included two professional judging panels that selected three winning films, encouraging filmmakers to create stronger and more influential environmental works.
Abdullah added that one of the festival’s broader goals was to present a positive image of Kurdistan — one centered on beauty, coexistence, and resilience despite regional challenges.
The Kurdistan Region is widely known for its mountains, forests, and natural landscapes, which have long inspired Kurdish writers, poets, and artists. Officials and organizers say environmental preservation remains an important priority as the region continues to promote sustainable development and cultural awareness.
